For coaches, classroom teachers, and recess leaders
Offer Marathon Kids during recess to give participants another opportunity to move and work toward their goals.
Choose a format
Optional laps: let interested participants run or walk laps while an adult scans ID cards or supervises the scanning station.
Planned movement time: schedule a short period for laps before free-choice recess, following your school’s recess policies.
Recess club: arrange a regular club session with staff or volunteers who can lead the activity and supervise participants.
Prepare for recess
Choose a club lead and agree on who will participate, when sessions will happen, and who will supervise.
Measure the route and create a track named “Recess” with the correct lap distance. Record recess laps on that track so you can report on them separately.
Print ID cards for participating students. You can keep an additional set ready for recess.
Invite teachers, recess monitors, or volunteers as Supporters. Assistant Coach permission lets helpers start scanning sessions. Invitees need to create or sign in to their account and accept the invitation.
Prepare a scanning device and plan how it will get to and from recess. Teach helpers how to scan ID cards.
Explain the route and scanning process to participants before the first session.
Track progress and celebrate
Recess mileage contributes to participant, class, grade, and club totals. Use your club overview and reports to share progress toward the club goal.
Recognize effort and personal improvement, and let participants move at their own pace.
