Pillar: Modeling the way for coaches

Choose simple ways to model movement, goal setting, and encouragement during your Marathon Kids program.

For coaches and educators.

Overview

Modeling the way means showing participants the habits and attitudes you encourage in your club. You do not need to be the fastest runner or have every answer. Choose two or three actions you can practice consistently.

Start here

  • Join in movement when you can.

  • Share a manageable goal and show how you work toward it.

  • Recognize effort and respond calmly when things do not go as planned.

Make movement part of club time

  • Participate in a warm-up, walk, or run when your coaching responsibilities allow.

  • Invite participants to choose a challenge that fits their starting point.

  • Share a simple example of how you stay active outside club time.

Try saying: “I’m working toward my goal one session at a time, too.”

Show goal setting in action

  • Tell participants about a personal movement or coaching goal.

  • Share progress through a goal board or a short group check-in.

  • Explain what you will try next when progress is slower than expected.

Try saying: “I did not reach my goal today. Here is the small step I’ll try next time.”

Model positive communication

  • Give specific encouragement about effort, improvement, and teamwork.

  • Celebrate individual and group accomplishments.

  • Show how to learn from setbacks without criticizing yourself or others.

  • Thank participants who support a teammate.

Next steps

Pick one behavior to model at your next session. Keep it simple enough to repeat throughout the season.
