Quick tips for adults to model healthy behaviors for their participants.

Research tells us that the first ten years of life are game-changing. An early, positive experience with physical activity means kids are 6X more likely to stay active into adulthood. As a coach, you have the opportunity to Model the Way for your participants!

Being a role model is about keeping things simple, leading by example, and showing that everyone is on a journey of growth.

Make Your Own Physical Health a Priority:

  • Lead by Example:

    • When possible actively participate in team workouts, demonstrating your commitment to fitness.

      • Engage in exercises that showcase proper form and technique, emphasizing the importance of doing activities correctly to prevent injuries.

    • Share how you stay active outside of club time.

  • Encourage Participation: Invite participants to join you in activities that suit their fitness levels. Whether it's a group run, a friendly sports match, or a shared fitness challenge, fostering a sense of camaraderie in physical activities reinforces the importance of regular exercise.

Track Your Progress:

  1. Set Personal Goals: Clearly define your own coaching or fitness goals. Communicate these goals to your participants to show that growth and improvement are ongoing processes.

  2. Visible Progress: Use a visual tracking system, such as a goal board or regular updates during team meetings, to showcase your progress. This transparency not only holds you accountable but also provides a tangible example of goal-setting in action.

Be Positive:

  • Positive Communication: Model effective communication by providing specific, positive feedback. Acknowledge individual and team accomplishments, reinforcing the idea that effort and improvement are valued.

  • Handle Challenges Gracefully: Share personal anecdotes about facing setbacks or challenges in your coaching career. Illustrate how maintaining a positive outlook and learning from adversity has contributed to your own growth and success. This vulnerability can inspire resilience in your participants.

Eat Healthy Food:

  • Demonstrate Nutritional Choices and Educate on Nutrition: When discussing nutrition, emphasize whole foods and balanced meals.

    • During team gatherings or events, choose and highlight nutritious food options, explaining how these choices contribute to sustained energy and overall well-being.

Get Enough Sleep:

  • Prioritize Rest: Explain the role of sleep in recovery and performance. Share your personal strategies for ensuring adequate sleep, such as establishing a consistent bedtime routine or creating a conducive sleep environment.

By using these simple tips in your coaching, you not only guide but also make a lively and motivating space where everyone can set and chase their goals together. Your dedication and openness will encourage participants to go after their own targets with excitement.
